VNC Server Gateway(tm) product - For iSeries, Unix, and Linux SystemseXport Ventures' RPG GUI/400(tm) for the IBM iSeries implements the identical windowing system that is used on all UNIX and Linux operating systems. This system is called “X Window” and consists of two components, a client and a server. X Window terminology may be confusing when first encountered. For example, the application needing X Window graphic services communicates with the X Window client. The client communicates over a network to an X Window server using X Window protocol. The server renders the graphics into image-memory for display. The common methods for implementing the X Window server are:
Server-Gateway ImplementationThe VNC Server-Gateway implementation uses a SUN Microsystems i86 Server or Workstation running the Solaris 10 operating system. The hardware specifications are listed in the Hardware section. The VNC Server software provides the unique capability of allowing for both dynamic and static sessions. What is VNC?Virtual Network Computing (VNC) is open-source software that provides remote access to graphical applications with display devices ranging from desktops to PDAs. There are two primary components to VNC, the server and the viewer. The VNC server runs on the VNC Server-Gateway and device-specific VNC Viewers run on the remote devices. What functions does VNC provide? The VNC server provides three functionalities to accomplish remote access. First it acts as a display that “displays” the image only in memory. Second, VNC continually monitors this memory for changes and sends these changes to the remote VNC viewer. Finally, it passes keystrokes and pointer coordinates from the viewer to the virtual display. What advantages does VNC provide? Some of the advantages of using VNC rather than X Window terminals are as follows:
