The AS/400's operating system, OS/400 does not ship with a windowing system.  RPG GUI Extensions provides this missing windowing system and gives the RPG programmer a set of native AS/400 GUI APIs for their RPG applications.   A well designed Graphical User Interface (GUI) must provide a modern, intuitive, and highly interactive interface to the user.  The two primary operatives are:

bulletIntuitive – The application user should require almost zero training.

For example: it should be extremely obvious to a user who has knowledge about drugs to use a "Drug Information" application.

bulletHighly Interactive - Every event caused by the user should be acted upon.

For example: When a user enters a keystroke, and there are actions that the application could perform, it should.

RPG GUI Extensions/400™ can provide both!

The advantages of our approach for developers are:

bulletWrite the complete application using only the ILE RPG language. This allows programmers to use their language-of-choice and have rapid application deployment too.
bulletWrite the complete application on one platform only, the AS/400. This has several advantages:
bulletRapid application deployment - Interactive GUI Builder
bulletMaintain one set of code - ILE RPG on the AS/400
bulletOne operating system to support - OS/400
bulletDirect access to all AS/400 API's including the database system - no ODBC etc.
bulletReduced logic and logistics complexity - Client/Server schemes are not used

Example: Through the use of the VTCL, an Interactive GUI Builder included with RPG GUI Extensions/400™, the programmer defines the GUI screens with components, called widgets, such as list boxes, menus, buttons, radio buttons, directory/file list boxes, or entry boxes.  (This replaces any DDS used to define green-screens.)  The programmer then places calls to RPG GUI Extensions/400™ APIs where  RPG EXFMT statements would typically be used to write to green-screens.

Display and Communications Requirements: The underlying X Window technology allows the application to be accessible from any TCP/IP capable LAN, WAN, or the Internet using workstations that range from 486 Wintels to Pentium Wintels to Palm computers.  For any UNIX/Linux based workstations,  nothing more is needed.   Microsoft Windows or Macintosh workstations can join in too with the addition of X Window Server (display) software.

bulletOS/400 V4R4 or later is required.
