Tcl is a "scripting style" programming language, commonly used with Unix operating systems, and now we have ported it to the AS/400.  Tk is the GUI part that provides features similar in appearance as Motif.

Key Benefits

bullet

Create new applications in minutes.

bullet

Integrate your DB2 databases directly into your Tcl/Tk/400 application.

bullet

Update legacy green-screen applications quickly using standard coding techniques or a GUI builder application.

bullet

Easy development environment - Tcl is a scripting language, no compile process.

DB2 Information

Your AS/400's DB2 data bases can be easily accessed from Tcl/Tk/400 using SQL.  Field types include:

SQL_DATE, SQL_TIME, SQL_TIMESTAMP, SQL_CHAR, SQL_VARCHAR, SQL_INTEGER, SQL_SMALLINT, SQL_DOUBLE, SQL_FLOAT, and SQL_REAL.

For example, the "execdirect" command allows you to SELECT, UPDATE, DELETE and INSERT rows in DB2 tables.  Commit and rollback commands are included.  Fetched data and column information are returned as a Tcl Associative Array.  Checkout the "Crib Sheet" available under our download section, submit the information form and then select the "Product Docs" button.

Specifications

Tcl is presently at version 7.6 and Tk at 4.2.  These are "matched" versions.   OS/400 must be at V4R4 or later.  The distribution includes the XLIB portion of X Window/400, the Tcl command interpreter, and the Tk (wish) console  OS/400 V4R5 is required DB2 access.

Also included:

bullet

VTCL - a GUI builder written completely in Tcl/Tk by Stewart Allen, is included free of charge.

bullet

REXEC and RSH (Remote Shell) - two remote execution command daemons for starting AS/400 applications and commands from remote workstations.
